Neal A. Shear, '78

Managing Partner, Managing Director, Apollo Commodities Management
Neal Shear is a managing partner at Apollo Commodities Management. He joined the buyout firm Apollo Management LP, led by legendary deal maker Leon Black, in May 2008, to start a commodities business, following Apollo?s decision to expand into commodities trading. Prior to joining Apollo, he was a managing director at Morgan Stanley, Co-Head of Institutional Sales and Trading, and Global Head of the Fixed Income Division. He was also a member of the firm?s Management Committee.
Mr. Shear joined Morgan Stanley in 1982 to start the commodities business, became a vice president in 1984, a principle in 1986, and a managing director in 1988. He served as Head of Global Commodities, including precious metals, energy, power, and natural gas from 1987-2005. Mr. Shear assumed his role as the Global Head of the Fixed Income Division in April 2005, and was subsequently appointed Co-Head of Institutional Sales and Trading in August 2005.
Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Mr. Shear was a trader at Citicorp from 1978-1979 and J. Aron & Company from 1979-1982.
Mr. Shear graduated from the University of Maryland in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He also attended Cornell University where he earned his Masters of Business Administration in 1978. Mr. Shear is a board member of Temple Emanu-El in New York, the Bond Market Association, and a member of the US-Egypt Business Council.
He resides in Manhattan with his wife, Jacqueline and their two children.
